Week 4: Project Planning

Compare and contrast elements of two different texts. For example, explore the similarities and differences between two characters in the texts, or examine how one theme is handled in similar and dissimilar ways in two different texts. You may choose from any of the readings we have done this semester including poetry, short fiction, and drama. You may also choose two texts from two different genres to write about.

I decided to continue working on this prompt, but I have changed the works I wanted to examine. I will still be writing about The Luck of Roaring Camp, but instead of About the House Girl, I will examine The Life and Adventures of Joaquin Murieta.

These stories tackle about a theme that I found interesting, and that is change.

Change in The Luck of Roaring Camp

  • Rough men acting more fatherly after the child was born
  • Positive changes
  • How the men view the world before and after the child was born
Changes in The Life and Adventures of Joaquin Murieta
  • From being xenocentric towards American to hating them
  • Negative changes on Joaquin's behavior
  • Positive changes on Joaquin's personality
I would also like to explore the similarities and differences between Kentuck and Joaquin.

  1. Hi Regina, thanks for your plans! I appreciate how you are focusing on the theme of change. I just want to remind you to make sure that if you choose to do the compare/contrast topic, you remember that the comparison is serving a larger goal. You aren't just lining up two readings and saying what is similar or different about them. You are comparing them as a way in to discussing the significance of the similarities or differences you find.

In your case, based on your plan, you will be comparing characters (? -- I'm not quite sure what it is you are comparing, actually) in order to discuss the significance of the concept of change in both stories.

And your overall argument about that significance should be the thesis of the project -- should drive the discussion that follows, in which you use comparison to reveal what you want to say about how the authors view change as a theme.

I look forward to reading your project submission!

  2. Hi Regina, I appreciate you taking a different approach with your project with comparing two stories that have a similar theme. I really enjoyed both of these stories and am very interested in reading your project. I also believe "change" is a theme in both of these stories. I also like your comparison of the two men, they were both very interesting and had strong beliefs.
What if Joaquin was accepted the challenges he was having with the California's and returned to Mexico? I know he disagreed with Mexico giving up their land, and wanted more for his life, but if he would have taken his fiance back to Mexico, he could have had a nice life with her. After three really good attempts to made something of himself in California, he allowed their actions change the person he was and wanted to be, into a true criminal, stealing, killing, and running from the law.
I really like the way you broke down your plan, this will be very useful in writing your project. Ms. H also gave some good feedback. It really helps me when I read her feedback, it gives me direction and helps me know if I am on the right track or if I am missing something. I can't wait to read your project. Great job!

  3. Hi Regina, I like that you pointed out that change is a theme for the two stories you will do you first project on. What if for the "The Luck of Roaring Camp" you leave out the bullet for positive changes? I think you want to make a paragraph for each bullet if I am correct, so how the rough men acting more fatherly after the baby was born and how the men view the world after the baby is born are both positive changes. What if you just have one paragraph for each of those? I hope I am making sense to you. It has been a while since I read The Life and Adventures of Joaquin Murieta, I do not remember reading that his personality changed in a positive way in the story? Can you refresh my memory? I just remember that he was very positive in the beginning and then changed to being a bad guy because of everything he was put through. Thanks for sharing, Regina.

  4. Hello Regina, great plans to start off your project with. You have a few key things that you plan to talk about for both stories, and I am sure that definitely helped when you went to do the real project. Change is emphasized a lot and it seems like that is going to be a big part of your project, I hope that goes well. Good plan and I am sure your project will come out just as good as this did.
